Reaction blog to “Night of the Living Dead” by George Romero , 1968
A film released in 1968 that changed the landscape of cinema and helped usher in the era of post-modern horror films.
I titled this reaction blog as I did, because as I recall having older brothers and sisters, they were very mean to me growing up. I have to say my childhood was kinda of strange I had both a mother and father who loved horror films and Halloween, so at a very young age I was introduced into horror films and it is probably why I have a fascination for them now.
I recall watching this movie for the first time I had to be about six years old, I think half of that time was spent covering my eyes and peeking between my fingers, and not knowing much about the world, I was quite terrified, especially later that night when my brother and sisters pretended to be “Ghouls” from the movie. Walking into my room chanting “They’re coming for you Jason”, I remember screaming my head off and sleeping with my parents that night.
The horror fiction is a genre of literature, and film which is intended to, or has the capacity to frighten, scare, disgust, or startle their readers or viewers by inducing feelings of horror and terror. I think this movie for the time frame that it came out, did just that, this was a case of societal breakdown, the dead rising because of unknown force, and the living’s inherently violent nature is all captured in this film.
Pop-Culturally it can be said that George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” is the birth of the modern zombie. I think its important for modern film makers to try to break the narrative of the zombie that Romero created, but still revisit what made “Night of the Living Dead” the success that it was.
