“The Forest” Review

The Forest is a horror movie released in 2016. This movie follows a young women named Jess who is traveling to Japan to look for twin her sister who has gone missing. Once Jess arrives she has been told the rumors that her sister may have gone to Aokigahara Forest which is locally known as the suicide forest. Jess is in denial that her sister would ever enter the forest but she has no lead on where to look for her. Jess is able to find a guide who is willing to take her into the forest along with a friend she meets. As they walk she is told to stay on the path. As she heads in she begins experiencing the angry and dark souls that prey on those who choose to enter the forest.

The horror had a little bit of a slow start as you lean Jess and her sisters background. The plot goes back and forth between what is happening to jess in the present and a horrific childhood memory. Ultimately they these memories cross path with jess. As the anticipation build you begin to notice odd things that happen. In one of the beginning scenes when jess arrives to Japan she sees a group of school girls leave the forest and when she turns around they are gone. Jess seems to be continuously haunted by the same few spirits. I did love how in this movie you are just as confused as jess and feeling the hallucinations come to life. I think the horror type is classic when it comes to spirits but the way they are able to take real experiences from people who have been in the forest is great.

I think for many people this is a great movie that has a few plot twists to the movie. If you like jump scares this one got me pretty good for a few of them. As I’m building my horror movie shelf this is higher on the list for its choice of idea and how everything fell into place.

  1. I agree with you; the movie makes the viewers really confused as much as the protagonist. There are plenty of times where you start saying, “What?” A good example of this is in the scene where the river flows both ways.
I was kind of frustrated by the ending because the movie keeps talking about if you enter the forest it will make you want to kill yourself, but that did not happen to the protagonist. Instead, she was only tricked into cutting her own wrist. However, in my opinion, it is still a good movie to watch.
