Squid Game

Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama streaming television series shown on Netflix. This series won a best picture Academy Award at the 92nd Oscars in 2020 which is the first foreign film to ever win an award like this. This series has become one of my favorite episode series. The symbolism was carefully crafted in each color, character play, and costume design. There have been so many different YouTube videos analyzing the effects of this series that made me spend countless hours watching them before bed.

At first, I wasn’t expecting this film to be so dark. But at the first death after an innocent children’s game of “Red Light, Green Light” my mind shifted. Death becomes apparent which each game played. The characteristical elements in the game make one anticipate what will be next which makes this series binge-watchy.

The series has missing elements that make people analyze the cause and effect of each role played. For example, the game that is played before the players are picked to participate may have a significant role in which player becomes within the game. It has been speculated that the color chosen would be the color the participant will become. The Red Envelope would make the participants become the workers and the Blue Envelope would make the participants become the players in the game.

There were three different overall classes of people within this game. The participants, the workers and the observers. It was not known that the workers were also trapped in this game as workers normally have freedom of will. In this series, they do not.

The children’s games played by the participants seem silly at first but at the sign of death, it makes the games even more challenging.

Each set design of the game was crafted to exaggerate the fantasy vs reality of the game from the maze-shaped hallways, to the players’ dormitory and even the dinner scene.

There was not a moment where I could figure out what was going on. Even the ending of the series made it seem like there would be a sequel to the series which I hope does come out soon.

  1. When I first heard about this show, I had no idea it was in a different language. Sure you can watch it in English, but its so much better in Korean with English subtitles. Im so glad it got the recognition it deserved at the Emmy’s because it just goes to show it doesnt have to be an American film that captivates an audience. I think that is a common misconception that im glad is being broken.

  2. Thanks for the comment! Yes! I love watching the sub-version of anything. The voice actors are just not the same. Also, translation gets skewed.
