Sunset Boulevard – Film Review

Talk about a movie that keeps you engaged even though they showed you the ending at the start! Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder is an amazing master piece created in 1950. The movie can be included in the classical Hollywood cinema era and can also be classified as an american film noir. The film features fantastic cinematography that captures and presents unique scenes that are considered memorable and influential in the film industry.

The movie includes two main characters being Joe Gillis (William Holden) who is an unsuccessful screenwriter and is drawn in, or basically falls into the fantasy world of former movie star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) who dreams of her return to the screen and her former glory days. The film follows Joe Gillis throughout his endeavors to get back on his feet and at times it seems like he is abusing his hospitality until you see the craziness and lack of stability in Norma’s habits and the way she acts. In the end the relationship feels more like a prison to Gillis as the movie progresses. The movie does a great job of connecting you with the characters and forming a relationship even though the end result has already been shown.

One of the most memorable scenes is the last scene after Norma has killed Joe Gillis. The cinematography in the scene is amazing how the cinematographer positions the cameras, other props, lighting and people to create one of the most confusing and eerily strange scenes which in turn is the reason why it is successful and amazing.

A great watch that i definitely recommend!

  1. I’ve only watched a few film noir, but the most recent one was a few weeks ago. It was Peter Gunn and although it was just one episode from the series, I enjoyed it a lot and it reminded me of what makes monochromatic films so great.
I’m not sure if Sunset Boulevard’s beginning was a bit confusing and loop-like as a film such as Pulp Fiction was but I’m sure that it was an attention grabber and kept the story entertaining.
With the combination of the movie’s powerful elements, I’m sure this is a movie that we can’t miss!
