In today’s America, all I see are Old politicians, old congressmen, old chairmen, etc. Countless presidential nominees have been well over the legal age to run, 35. Many of them, even almost double the age. Nowadays we have the two oldest nominees, literally running against each other, Biden and Trump. But what about the younger nominees you might ask? It is difficult and I would say that age should not matter for many different careers, but for someone who is running the country, there should be talk about who is being allowed into the office.
So, why is there no young president emerging, like JFK? I believe it’s simple, they are not given the chance to succeed. Take Trump and Biden for instance. Trump spent a whopping $1.96 billion on the campaign trail in 2020 in a losing effort! His successor, President Biden, racked up a large $1.69 billion in a winning bid, according to NPR.org. The facts are, that you need a lot of money to run and win nowadays. Simply these younger, less experienced nominees, don’t stand a chance. They do not have daddies’ money as well as the support behind them, but not because they do not promote good ideas they are just not given a chance to speak. People are set that it is either him or him and this is going to envetable be a huge issue later on. Politics should not be a this or that because that leaves no room for conversation and talk.
Let’s say there is a young nominee who one day wins the election once again. How would he change the media and change social norms? I think it would bring trust and understanding from the younger generations. On the other hand, I feel like the media/news would have problems with the young president. They would critique them for lack of “experience”, and find ways to make them look bad to appeal to their target audience like Baby Boomers, but they would also create a new wave of people more interested in politics. If people saw a younger president they might have more patriotism, or follow politics more. It would add a new spunk to the government, but also new forms of ideas because clearly, something is not working out. I believe the news doesn’t cover other nominees besides Trump or Biden, simply for more publicity. Like I said before, if the younger nominee is low on dough, they will not be taken seriously. This leads to little to no time on-air or less social media attention compared to Trump and Biden.
In conclusion, I think in America today, there should be some change in how people view and vote for younger candidates. Not only do I think that younger nominees should have equal opportunities, but I also believe that there should not be an age cap, but right now there needs to be someone new. A newer candidate is younger and can lead us into a new era instead of feeling like history keeps repeating itself.
